Whole Body Wellness Series: The Nutritional Deficiency Crisis

Diet and nutrition is an important aspect of health. What we put into the body directly affects how we feel and will contribute to lack of energy, poor focus and concentration, depression and anxiety, inflammation and even pain. Without proper nutrition, we create our own barrier to healing. Taking preventative measures such as exercise and techniques to reduce stress, without proper nutrition, the body will not have the substance it needs to repair.

Ultimately, what we put into our bodies is what we put out. A lack of proper stress management results in the inability to deal with change, which becomes psychologically overwhelming and may lead to a breaking down of the emotions, psychological health, and eventually the nervous system becomes affected.

Furthermore, the lack of adequate physical activity results in the degradation of important muscles including the heart, postural muscles, and can result in intolerance to more simple tasks, such as walking short distances and comfortably getting onto and off the floor. As the natural process of aging continues, without physical activity to maintain muscles that support balance, we become more susceptible to falls and loss of bone density.

The idea of wellness extends beyond maintaining healthy stress levels and physical activity for prevention or reversal of chronic disease. The American diet and the concepts of proper nutrition provided by mass marketing and the media can be misleading and outright confusing. It is without question that our society allows deceiving marketing on what is essentially ‘junk’ and label it ‘natural’ for consumers to buy thinking it’s safe to eat, therefore, the more informed the consumer is, the better nutrition choices one can make.

Nutrition and Deficiency
Obesity is an increasing problem in the U.S. as more than one-third of the population is obese with estimated medical costs exceeding $150 million each year from complications of obesity.

The Malnutrition of Obesity: Micronutrient Deficiencies That Promote Diabetes: “Obesity is highly prevalent both in the United States and worldwide and is projected to surpass tobacco use as the most economically important modifiable risk factor in public health and disease. “The increased availability of low-cost, high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods over the past four decades is a key component to the rise in obesity worldwide”

Deficiencies outlines by the National Institute of Health includes:

  • Vitamin D – Vitamin D influences more than 200 genes, is essential for the absorption of calcium, strengthens immunity, helps support hormones and glucose metabolism
  • Chromium – Chromium is important for regulating blood glucose, digestion of fat, carbohydrates and protein, promotes relaxation of blood vessels
  • Biotin – Biotin is a B vitamin that helps digest fats and carbohydrates, maintains proper nervous system function, supports soft tissue health
  • Thiamine – Thiamine is another B vitamin and co-enzyme that assists carbohydrate and fat metabolism, supports the nervous system, maintains proper heart function, and supports energy production
  • Antioxidant Vitamins – oxidative stress can be caused by many sources, including breathing. Antioxidant vitamins are found primarily as phytonutrients that give fruits and vegetables their color. The richer and darker the color, the more nutrients it has.

Packaged and processed foods lack sufficient nutrients to support a healthy body and prevent disease. If we examine some of these common deficiencies and the body systems these vitamins support, we can clearly see a link between nervous system function, digestion, cardiovascular health and blood sugar regulation, which is the primary deficit in diabetes.

Common medications, such as pain killers and opioids, that help treat chronic diseases may also deplete or prevent vitamins from being absorbed.

Are your medications causing nutrient deficiency: “In some cases, a drug may interfere with your body's ability to absorb a nutrient from dietary sources. Such is the case with proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), used to reduce acid reflux and heartburn. PPIs can keep you from absorbing vitamin B12, and low B12 levels in the blood can lead to confusion, muscle weakness, and falls.”

Although many Americans try to supplement nutritional needs with the use of over-the-counter vitamins, other issues may also arise from this method of supplementation. Research has discovered that some supplement manufacturers lack the vitamins it claims to have, some multivitamins may not be bioavailable so that the body does not absorb the nutrients or, most commonly, multivitamins may not have the synergistic relationships between certain vitamins to be metabolized.

The studies that indicate the direction we are headed as a society is staggering. Without proper guidance, a healthy diet filled with colorful fruits and vegetables, adequate physical activity, and continued mismanagement of stress will continue to spiral further into a world of pain, fatigue, poor quality of life, and a lifetime of doctor’s visits.
